The incessant tapping woke Taylor up. She glanced around and noticed she was alone on Ninaâs bed, bottomless and covered only by Ahyaâs thick fluff. She must have fallen asleep right after she finished. She flushed hard as she could smell and detect the presence of Nina in the other room. She hoped that Nina didnât find her like this when she got home last night. She panicked a bit when she remembered she also didnât close the windows with Pawtube upâon full, damning display for Nina to see.
She quietly slipped off the bed and tucked her legs into her jeans, hoping Nina wouldnât notice her movements too much in the bedroom. The tapping continued on. Trying to act casual, she stepped out into the living den. The sun was already shining brightly into the room, illuminating the shape of Nina sitting in front of her laptop. Taylor flinched inwardly as it seemed Nina was looking directly at the screen.
âHey, Nina.â Taylor tried to sound chipper, even if she was feeling anything but.
Nina glanced up from her thoughts. The tapping of her wing on the table stopped. âOh, hey, Taylor. I see you enjoyed yourself.â Although it sounded like playful ribbing, there was a certain unease about the swan this morning.
Taylor shied away and didnât meet Ninaâs eyes. She sat down at the furthest seat from her, feeling some distance might help matters. It was probably fruitless anyway. âI really donât know what came over me last night. Iâm sorry aboutââ
âItâs okay.â Nina cut her off, terse but not completely upset. âI was the one who prompted you to do it, teasing you and all.â
âIâll go clean and make the bed if you want,â Taylor offered. She felt weird discussing this with Nina. This was a situation she had never been in before.
âIâll do it. Besides, I got the key to the laundry room downstairs anyway.â The tapping resumed. âJust a shame I wasnât here to see it.â
Taylor looked at her oddly. That was quite an unexpected thing to say. âAre you alright, Nina? You look pretty tense.â
Nina looked down at her knee as she followed Taylorâs gaze. Her leg was bouncing in tune to her tapping. She stopped both. âNo, Iâm fine. What makes you say that?â
âI donât know. You seemâ¦different. Distant, somehow. Did everything go alright with the group last night?â Taylor offered her paw to grab as she extended her arm across the table.
Nina looked at it a moment before draping her wing over Taylorâs paw. âIt went fine. Everything was great. Theyâre all pretty friendly there.â Nina cracked a smile, but it still felt she was holding something back.
âSo whatâs eating at you then?â
Nina chuckled nervously. âWell, my father called this morning and wants to see me at church. He demands I show.â
Taylor cocked her head slightly. She was almost positive her father shunned his daughterâs very existence when she decided to rebel and go full metal with the band. âWhen was the last time you spoke to your dad?â
âSince before you first joined us.
